Short-term effects of potassium fertilization on the hydraulic conductance of Laurus nobilis L.

This study reports experimental evidence on the effect of short term potassium fertilization on potassium uptake, tissue concentration and hydraulic conductance of pot-grown laurel plants. Potassium uptake and loading into the xylem of laurel seedlings increased within 24 h from fertilization. Potassium was not accumulated in roots and leaves, but the [K+] of xylem sap was 80% higher in fertilized plants (+K) than in potassium starved plants (-K), likely as a result of recirculation between xylem and phloem. This increase in xylem sap [K+] resulted in a 45% increase in transpiration rate, a 30% increase in plant hydraulic conductance (Kplant) and a 120% increase in leaf specific conductivit…

The impact of the cultivation practices on arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis mechanism in a walnut tree - corn agroforestry system

The English walnut (Juglans regia L.) is the main species cultivated for the production of edible nuts. Owing to a sparse canopy and a deep rooting system, walnut is an ideal species for alley cropping, an agroforestry practice able to enhance productivity through interplant facilitative mechanisms. Walnut agroforestry requires the large scale production of seedling rootstocks selected to provide the best anchorage, vigour, and tolerance of pathogens. Due to the heterozygosity of walnut, the characteristics of agronomical interest of the chosen cultivar are not inherited via seed propagation. Carbohydrate and nutritional responses to stem girdling and drought stress with respect to understanding symptoms of Huanglongbing (HLB) in Citrus

The most important worldwide problem in citrus production is the bacterial disease Huanglongbing (HLB; citrus greening) caused by phloem-limited bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus. The earliest visible symptoms of HLB on leaves are vein yellowing and an asymmetrical chlorosis referred to as “blotchy mottle”, thought to be the result of starch accumulation. We tested the hypothesis that such visible symptoms are not unique to HLB by stem girdling 2-yr-old seedlings of two citrus rootstocks with and without drought stress in the greenhouse.
